Homesteading is dirty work. In the winter it can be cold and dirty! Carhartt makes a fantastic pair of overalls that will keep you warm and clean. I can literally go outside to do the barn work in my pajamas. When I come inside the PJ’s are as clean as when I left, my overalls take the beating. One HUGE plus to the Carhartt Overalls is that they can be taken off or put on without removing your shoes. I have a size 13 boot and I am able to take them off and put them on without removing my boots!
We have a large family, and often the older children are outside with us doing homestead projects together. Using a pair of Midland Walkie Talkies helps us talk with each other across long distances. This is really helpful when setting up electric fences across the field, we can communicate without yelling at each other!
If you have livestock then sooner or later you will find yourself in the barn at night, trying to give medicine, deliver a calf or kid, or find a lost animal. The Streamlight Switchblade is a awesome rechargeable flashlight that can be used to light up an entire room, and with the powerful magnet on the base of the light you can stick the light to a wall, fixture, tractor, while you keep two hands free to bull calves!
I ALWAYS keep a knife on me. Usually that knife is a multitool, and when I am not planning on doing a big job on the homestead, I like to keep a smaller lightweight knife in my pocket. The leatherman Skeletool is an AWESOME little knife that will help you with all those little jobs that require a knife, set of pliers, or even a screw driver.
Every homestead will invest a small fortune in hoses. Wether you are watering plants or chickens, you will find you need to run some hoses around your property. I like to get quality hoses that last for years. Teknor Apex makes a Zero G lightweight hose that is guaranteed to last 6 years! This hose is durable, but at the same time lightweight and easy to work with!
