How To Build a Portable Livestock Shelter

August 20, 2019 by Aust 5 Comments

Learn how to build a portable livestock shelter in todays video.

If you need a portable shelter for livestock, one that you can move by hand, that will keep the animals dry when it rains and shaded in the midday sun, this shelter works great and is easy to build!

This shelter is built on 2 6×6 skids.

The 6×6 skids are attached together with metal pipe, you can use all thread pipe, we had our pipe custom made from a metal fabricator, but all thread would work good.

On top of the 6×6 we used 2 cattle panels, 16 FT long.

On top of the cattle panel we attached a 12 x 16 ft reflective tarp with zip ties.

Finally we attached a tow strap with 2 hook ends to pull the shelter with.

This shelter works for all livestock, sheep, goats, cows, pigs, etc. Some animals are harder on the tarp, so for those animals some plywood may be used to block the tarp sides.

Hello! I am looking into getting sheep, and I was wondering if this type of shelter is still good to house sheep in the winter- I live in Vermont, so our winters can be cold and we can get a bunch of snow.

Hi Sophie, I have never wintered sheep. However, they are made of wool… very cold tolerant. This does a good job of giving them a wind break, and with a third tarp secured to the back I think it would be just fine, we use it all winter long for our cows and camels.

Just wondering if you thought wheels could be added to the back to make it easier to drag? I just cant picture in my head how it could be worked so that the wheel isn’t touching the ground when it’s just sitting there but when lifted from the front, it hits the ground. If that makes sense.

Krystle, wheels could certainly help, just need some heavy duty wheels and hardware to attach it all.
