LIVE SHOW TONIGHT ABOUT LIVESTOCK FOR BEGINNERS… But first
It is funny how much people can be changed by homesteading.
When K first said she wanted cows I didn’t think we should bring them on the homestead.
I made it clear these were “Her” cows.
I was willing to support the endeavor in whatever ways she needed, but I had my pigs and was happy with them and wasn’t looking for bigger livestock.
Milking daily sounded too much like a chore to me.
Well, over the last (going on) 4 years with cows (wow that time flew by!) things have changed quite a bit.
I have grown to love these Mini Jersey cows.
I am afraid to admit, I think Mini Jersey Cattle have become my favorite homestead animal!
Sorry pigs, I’m a no good turncoat.
Now I’m getting involved in the daily milking too!
The is a big difference with livestock that you raise for meat and livestock you keep and breed.
Most meat animals are not around that long (except for beef).
Livestock that you keep and breed need all sorts of upkeep.
Last week we found ourselves doing something for the first time ever…
We had to grind our calfs teeth down! (AND WE USE A DREMEL TO DO IT 😉
Rabbits are new to our farm this year.
We setup a colony style habitat for our rabbits inside our barn.
After a few weeks of observing the rabbits we have realized that there are some slight changes needed to our colony.
The upkeep, daily chores, infrastructure changes, and power tool dentistry are all part of the little things that make keeping livestock fun!
I feel one of the best things you can do for yourself, and especially for your children, is to raise some livestock, even if only for a short time.
The connection you and your family will form to these animals that are so dependent on you is powerful.
And the rewards livestock give back are hard to beat!
