Daisy was letting out a horrible cry, and throwing up. We new something was wrong. Our best guess, our Goat was poisoned by eating Mountain Laurel somewhere on the property. Goats that browse on native vegetation are always at risk for eating something they shouldn’t. Goats are especially effected by Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron and Azaleas.
In this Video you will see what steps we took to save a goat that was poisoned.
In the event that your Goat is poisoned by eating Mountain Laurel, our Vet suggested feeding them a mixture of
- 1 whole beer
- 1 tbsp baking soda
- 2 tbsp epsom salt
Give every 3 to 4 hours until the vomiting stops.

Sorry to hear that Aust!
Tim says
Sorry for your loss.
We lost a baby pygmy goat years ago. She had gotten out of her pen and eaten some of our rhododendron. We had her in our living room for several days and like Daisy thought she was getting better but one night just passed.
It was very upsetting for my children, who were quite young at the time, and wife.
Raven says
Sorry for the loss of Daisy but thank you for sharing it.
I think people get a very romanticized idea of homesteading and farming because it is popular right now. It is important to understand the reality of working with animals and I think it was brave and very responsible of you to share the whole story even though it had a less than Disney ending.
Aust says
Thanks guys, for the support. Raven, your spot on, the Disney endings are rarely a farm reality.
Lauren says
Well captured! Beautiful goat. Sorry guys!
