K and I went out into the barn to film an update video this week.
It was supposed to be a Happy News Video, with lot’s of good news. We even filmed the intro saying “we have good news to share!”
Then we found something while filming that was literally so disappointing we had to re film our intro to our video because the news wasn’t happy.

THE GOOD NEWS
The good news is that after attempting to have all our cows, including our Camel (cow) Millie Bred, we have some (so far) successful breedings.
After running a blood test on our 3 (bovine) cows, Luna and Honeybee both came back with a positive pregnancy test. And Grasshopper we believe was bred successfully after the tests were done, so a recheck in a month will tell us if she took.
Millie, our camel, was witnessed being bred by a camel bull, and she is showing the tell tale signs of a bred camel. So let’s all hope….
THE BAD NEWS
As we were filming the video we found some bloody mucus on Luna’s tail. Some of you may remember Luna lost a pregnancy back in the summer.
It seems that this may have happened again.
UGH.
This year breeding the cows has been so hard. All of our A.I. attempts failed, and now after 2 different bulls it seems we still don’t have Luna bred.
In a few weeks when we have Grasshopper’s blood test sent in we will recheck Luna and confirm our guess, and then we will decide what to do next.
So for now, stay tuned.
IT ISN’T 2020’s FAULT… IT’S FARMING
It is easy to say 2020 strikes again, but the truth is that when you grow your farm you grow your list of problems.
No matter the year, no matter if there is a weird pandemic going on, and rioting in the streets, and aliens attacking…
The more animals you have on your farm, the more trouble will come.
So does that mean you should not have animals? Does that mean you shouldn’t homestead? NO.
We still think, even with all the problems homesteading or farming can bring, that it is the best way of life for a family.
BUT, that said, we like to be honest with our viewers so you all know what to expect if you decide to make the leap.
I have been thinking about this a lot lately. You see, this year was our biggest year yet on our Homestead. We had more animals, and more KINDS of animals, than ever.
And with that came more problems than ever. And more lessons learned.
SO next year I plan on starting the year with a new series of videos.
The idea of this series is to help you pick WHICH animals are right for your homestead.
I don’t think you should have all the animals. If you get all the animals you will have all the problems.
Instead, I think most homesteads would do well to have a core of animals that fit their needs, property, and animal husbandry style, and raise those.
I hope this series helps a lot of people choose the right animals for their homestead, and helps them avoid growing too big, and suffering from too many problems.
WE WILL BE OK
We will adapt, adjust, do whatever it takes to work through these new issues. A decade of homesteading has taught us to deal with disappointment. And of course we will keep sharing what we learn along the way.
If you like our show, appreciate that we share the honest truth about what happens on the homestead (instead of sugar coating it) there is 1 way you can help us to be sure we can continue to produce it.
Right now we are running our Black Friday – Cyber Monday Sale, it is the best sale we do all year. You can get 4 Months for FREE on a year long membership, and lock that price in for the lifetime of your membership.
