Winter is the slowest time on the homestead. Not as many animals to take care of. Not as many plants to check on. Nows the time to plan for a better year come spring!
In this episode we discuss planning ahead
On the Farm
In the Home(stead)
and Outside in the Forests and Streams
Wether you want to grow more veggies, or harvest a deer this season, NOW is the time to start preparing for a year of sustainability!
Terry says
We’ve had a garden for some time. Each year, it gets larger. Last year, we built a chicken coop and got some chickens. Because of that, we still had the garden, but it didn’t expand. This year, while I’m not sure I’ll build any new raised beds, the garden will expand. I’m going to try to grow enough tomatoes for us to can and/or freeze so we wont have to buy any tomato based sauces next year.

Great goal Terry! We also are looking to grow more and put up more, tomatoes especially. Last year we made 1 jar of sauce from our Tomatoes, that’s it 🙁 want much more this year!
Terry says
yea, last year we planted 2 brandywine, 1 roma, and 3 cherry tomato pants (was supposed to be 2, 2, and 2 but had a mixup during planting. I never got to try the brandywines because we only got a few, and my wife ate them. this year, I got some Cherokee Purples and Amish Paste.
Cynthia says
My goal for this year is to grow a crap ton of tomatoes. It will be my first summer living in a house and not my tiny apartment. I’m looking forward to making the most of our .7 acres!
The eventual goal is to have chickens and a sizeable vegetable garden and blueberry bushes. But I want to be sure that we dont dive in so fast that we lose interest.
