Homesteading as a lifestyle can seem like a far away goal.
I am always in awe of people who make large, grandiose change in their life. They sell their possessions and buy a houseboat in Thailand. Throw out all their conventional cleaning supplies and commit to vinegar, green tea, and tea tree oil. They quit their job, buy a farm, and get a couple of horses.
For most of us, a huge change is not in the cards. Some individuals know at a young age that they want to homestead and track a path through young adulthood to living a homesteading lifestyle. The rest of us traipse a little more haphazardly through our own upbringing, expectations, and life experiences before we decide, hey! I want to start doing more of my own thing.
So what to do? How can you start doing something TODAY, RIGHT NOW, that isn’t a huge financial or time commitment that will start you on the path?
Make a small, doable commitment to change one thing in your life to be more sustainable, more do-it-yourself.
Like what?
It can be very simple. One of my favorite things to advise people to do is to choose one local product to replace a mass-produced product. Living in Massachusetts, I had a few options available to me. I chose to stop buying any type of mass-produced or imported maple syrup. Instead, I exclusively purchase maple syrup from a local family farm in my area.
Perhaps you want to become more hands-on. Pick a simple project and make a small bookcase, mix your own lip balm, or perhaps my own personal favorite category, make something out of a used pallet. Pinterest is full of great ideas- you can follow my pallet idea board here.
In fact, what you really need to do is check out the Homesteady 101 Pinterest Board. On this board, you’ll be inspired by the ways in which others have made homesteading work for them.
