After looking for years… We finally picked a Homestead Property to build our very own OFF GRID family homestead on.
Sadly… it didn’t take us long to realize we had chosen the WRONG PROPERTY.
There were 2 properties we were seriously considering to build our off grid homestead at. Originally we decided to go with the property we called “Crawdad Creek” because it HAD WATER!
Obviously water is important for a homestead. Animals, plants, and of course… YOU need water.
Building a homestead were there was multiple creeks seemed like the right idea!
Sadly, in the case of Crawdad Creek, too much of a good thing is a real problem.
Too many creeks on this property mean the project was going to cost WAY MORE MONEY that we planned on.
Long driveways, with bridges and culverts, drainage work, all that costs a lot of cash that we didn’t have.
So we looked back to the second property, Sunny Mountain, to see if it could work for us.
When we looked hard at that as our only chance to move forward… we found something big!
Ok. It wasn’t that big. It was just a little puddle really. But hidden beneath the water, was CLAY!
If Sunny Mt had enough clay, with a couple days and some big equipment we could build a farm pond, and solve the biggest problem we had with the Sunny Mountain property, the lack of water!
We jumped in head first.
It wasn’t easy, but in 3 weeks, after 3 vehicle breakdowns, a few trips back and forth to the pipe store, and lots of hours spent away from home, we were ready to see if the pond would catch water.
And the weather was happy to oblige us to a proper test… a TROPICAL STORM!
