I tried to leave the below as a review on iTunes but something wasn’t working. Probably user error on my end. ..
Growing up in rural Upstate NY, many of the topics covered this first year of Homesteady were common occurrences in my childhood in some way, shape, or form. Twenty plus years in the military took me away from that rural lifestyle and smack dab into the hustle and bustle of our crazy world. My only refuge to regain my “center” was time spent outdoors and away from the madness. Austin’s ability to weave a story, the mental setting that a listener develops through great production, Kendra’s humble and calming contributions, along with the matter of fact and often comic relief that Accountant Mike brings to this podcast helps transport me to a place that is closer to “center” as I listen. Being an angler, like a fishing swivel, this podcast helps keep me connected to the important aspects of humble rural upbringing no matter how much line has been let out (or how twisted it tries to get) as I strive now with my family to lessen our impact and live in a more efficient and self-sustaining manner. Thank you Austin and Kendra! And the decision for just one more…..That is the only decision that I could have envisioned being made after Boone’s passing. Keep this great thing going!

Jon,
Thanks for the awesome review! Can I see if I can put it up for you? Id love for it to be there!

I have had goats with horns and I found that was a lot of trouble. So I totally agree with debudding them.
randy chappelle says
I just read your comment on dis-budding goats.
Aft er raising dairy goats for several years, and now getting ready to start again. I have seen the disastrous effects of horns on them. I have seen super soft and capacious udders that have been ruined with only a playful butt . I have saw goats die with their heads stuck in the fence. Luckily, they were someone else’s goats. And I have seen children made scared of goats by getting a horn when they were not handling the goats with respect. So suffice it to say that every goat on my place are dis-budded shortly after birth. it takes place when the little horn buds are just being felt.

I too have had trouble leaving comments on iTunes. This has been a really enjoyable podcast, I have been getting caught up on podcast I have not heard. Looking for areas to hunt in the central texas area which do not cost $3000 a season.

Thanks John, glad your enjoying it!
Meagan West says
John I am having the same problem. This is my first year doing big game hunting and have the help of a couple friends but mostly I have been doing research on my own. The podcast has helped a lot! Have you considered doing public land hunts?
Aust says
Meagan, yes, actually next week I may be going on a public land hunt! That said, I am fortunate to have over 500 acres of private land to hunt! Properties we have gathered over time.

Dear Jon,
You and your family are doing a great job. Keep up the hard work and the great information on how to homestead. Don’t be discouraged by the cyber bullies of youtube or other media outlets. They don’t understand the life we live b/c they don’t want to. As long as people do the hard work and they don’t have to see it then they are fine. I have lived on my homestead for 33 years and i’m 33 years old haha. After my father passed my wife and i bought our property and are doing great things with it. I also one day wish to just work doing what i love where i love to be. Not too many people understand how the land keeps us at peace. A great poem i saw after my dad passed was “So God Made a “Farmer”, by Paul Harvey. If you haven’t seen it i recommend reading it. Reminds me of my father and the work ethic that he had. A strong work ethic is as good as gold and a great legacy to pass on to children. Our homestead/farm is located near Punxsutawney Pa. A little bit of a go from where you guys are moving to but if you ever need anything we might be able to help. You guys are going to be PA farmers and we take care of our own.
I’ve been to many states and i still love home. Our creeks, hills, forest, wildlife, well just about everything is perfect. God really blesses us but to many people overlook his blessings b/c they are “too simple”. In a world that we live in now a days people need alittle more simple and alot more God. I enjoy praise and worship at church but i really feel closer to God when i’m out in his beautiful creation.
Well i better get going. Again welcome to our great state. If you ever what to look me up on facebook my name is Gary Olson from Marion Center Pa. I try to post some of my projects but i don’t own a phone. My wife does but yeah she uses it more then me haha.
God bless you and your family.
Take care

Keep up the good work, I am hooked. Thank you for the adventure.

I just wanted to thank you for all of the thoughtful work that you put into this podcast. It has inspired me to put a five year plan in place, to get the heck out of the rat race. Hello Austin,
My husband found your YouTube channel earlier this year and shared it with me. Ever since I have been hooked (fellow fisher myself 🙂 ) I love how down to earth you all are and learning along with you.
We have been taking “stepping stones” since 2014 to our “dream farmstead”. We were living in a 800sq ft apartment and my husband built us some container gardens and some vertical gardens and we really enjoyed the fresh produce we were getting in the summer. We knew we wanted to move to something bigger so we saved up that year and bought our first home in Nov. 2015. We knew we wanted acreage, and found our place. Last year we did a bigger garden and started chickens (luckily for us the place we found had the infrastructure for both). And this years big venture… goats (despite your animate podcast that goats are the worst, lol). Just this Sunday we got our first pail of fresh milk.. it was sooo rewarding… And we are very excited for what is the next stepping stone in our future.
Thank you again for your awesome YouTube channel and podcasts. You have been a huge inspiration for what we need to do for marketing and selling our excess.
Aust says
WOW! congrats Mandy, awesome to see the slow and steady stepping stones way working for you and your husband! Keep at it! 😉
Jason says
Heard my first podcast from you yesterday. Listened to the second this morning. (2 Quick ones from 2015)
In 2 weeks, I will be moving to my 22.5 acre paradise away from the suburbs and look forward to checking out more on my 69 mile drive to work.
Thank you in advance!
Jason
Nate says
I just discovered your podcast last week, and I am completely hooked. I’ve been gardening vegetables and wheat in a vacant half-lot, canning food, and fantasizing about a move to the country for some time. I was searching for more information from people that have made the move, and this is EXACTLY what I was looking for.
The cost analysis from Accountant Mike is invaluable. There are so many ways that someone could go wrong and hurt themselves financially, and this goes a long way toward alleviating that fear. Your perspective as a former city-guy is perfect for this, and provides a lot of encouragement for someone looking for a way out of the burbs.
Just in case you’re short on ideas, here are a few (even if they’re not your personal expertise):
– Full-cycle farming (crops to animal feed to market, etc)
– How to penetrate the world of auction houses and equipment sales
– Rural society, functions, lifestyle. How are the locals different?
– Renting out your land to be farmed (benefits/costs/finding opportunities)
– Specifics on land management (crop rotation, using chickens to till ground, water management)
– What the heck is FFA/4H, and how does it work?
– Better to specialize in a cash crop, or grow everything for sale?
– Is it possible to make a living from the farm alone, or compete with Big-Ag?
– Home-schooling options
– Best way to find a homestead – auctions/pre-built/vacant land/other?
Please keep this going! You’re doing a great thing.
Aust says
Some AWESOME ideas here Nate! Thanks!

Hi i am from kenya ,i really like the way you guys live .as to me i have a small dairy farm with capacity of 15 cows and am making a living out of the cows why are you not expanding your farm to income generating especially the dairy.
Aust says
We are slowly moving into that direction with our Dairy. We do however make money from our pigs and chickens every year. Keep it up Radhi! 15 cows is quite a nice farm operation!
Trevor says
You guys are awesome I love the trial and error you guys do it helps us learn for when we get a bigger property for more animals!

Great information, you guys are an inspiration! I grew up in the suburbs but my Dad let me dig up the back yard and grow pumpkins. I would than sell pumpkins around the neighborhood out of my wagon. When I was a kid l always had some kind of business. Now I’m 63 and have been blessed with great family and business and recently purchased a farm at auction. The farm has 2 houses, we are rehabbing one house, our daughter and her family are remodeling the other (dream come true). Your videos and pod casts give great instruction and motivation for those of us who want to be on the land and try new things! Thanks

So happy I found you! Enjoy your videos and information. We moved to 9 acres in May in Indiana. We just lost 13 hens in 2 days (their heads were missing). After securing the henhouse and locking them for the evening we found the remaining 8 dead! Any expertise would be appreciated. We’re planning on ducks in two weeks and goats for the spring. What are we NOT doing right?

Good Morning.. I recently started listening to your pod cast. My husband and I are a subscriber to your You Tube Channel. My family and I one year ago purchased land in upstate NY ( Oswego County). We currently live in southern NJ and on the weekends travel to upstate NY building our future homestead! My husband and I work FT M-F and each have about an hour commune to work ( ugh I know) I’ve been listening to your podcast on my way to work and home. I’ve learned so much and enjoy your families information!! We still have a few years before we can make the final move to NY and we have the itch so bad! We do what we can here in NJ. We breed and raise New Zealand meat rabbits and have an hydroponics system ( in our living room lol) and grown their food.. non GMO barley! We also have a garden, can and dehydrate foods. Everyday we are researching and trying to learn and try new skills for our love to NY! We thank you and your family for al the information we have gotten from your pod casts and You Tube videos!!!

What’s poppin,
I stumbled upon your YouTube channel completely by accident, and I’ve got to tell you it’s the happiest accident I’ve ever had. The vids are great bro and your poultry is in top notch condition.
Just a lil question, have you ever considered going to any poultry shows to display any birds?
Anyways hope you can get back to me. Much love and I’m out..
Aust says
Jack, we are not much for showing animals, never did think of doing a show, maybe when the kids are older, it would be fun for them to show for sure! Win some ribbons and such!
Thanks for watching!

Hi, came across your channel while YouTubing goat fencing issues. Love your channel! My husband and I have always wanted to start homesteading, but something always seemed to get in the way… until now! Though we don’t have that perfect slice of paradise yet, nobody said we couldn’t get a headstart, right? So, we’ve got some goats now and are in the process of setting up rabbit cages and chicken pens so we can bring those in… But that is all the animals our current space will allow for at this time. We don’t want to just buy the first peice of land we see out there. We are looking for our forever spot and truly want it to be our paradise, so it has to be “just right”. Plus, we don’t want to go in debt either, so we are going to take it smart and slow. Anyway, your channel has been a plethora of information mixed with just the right personality style that we can relate to. Your family is great – thanks for everything!
Aust says
Thanks Shawna! Congrats on starting bit by bit, goats are fun! I now know as I have them again (after swearing them off for a while haha 😉

I have been kicking around the idea of starting to make some videos. After this latest video….I don’t know if it would be worth the effort. Once Youtube gets rid of all the undesirables, what will they have left. Will anyone watch?? Would any company want to give them advertisment money to place on a vidoe that very few people will watch. I think this will come full circle. Once they sanitize youtube not to offend anyone, it becomes MYspace 2.0!!

I have been following since just before you announced your move from Squash Hollow. I find yourapproach a breath of fresh air. Honest and realistic to start with but better than that sensible. You look at the entire picture and are flexible to changes when they are needed. Your care and obvious love for your animals just makes my day. My husband and I have retired to 15 acres in South Central Kentucky. We have two standard Jersey cows. [Bought from a purebred breeder who lost his contract to sell milk to Dean Foods when Walmart dropped Dean] Katie is 9 now and Lassie just 4. They thrive on pasture but we supplement with a good grain ration that is non gmo. Fed in moderate amounts. The dairy fed them grain but not excessive amounts but always had top quality hay in front of them. It has taken time for both these cows to adjust to fresh green grass in their diet after a life in a working dairy. Katie we got in January, she is now officially ‘plump’. Lassie has been here a month and is starting to put on weight slowly.
Your wonderful cows always look so good. It is so frustrating to hear the remark….dairy cows are supposed to be thin looking.
We look forward to following your adventures on your new homestead.
Fiona
PS: I have bred and raised cattle since I was a kid. Both commercial and Registered Shorthorn and Angus. I always had some sort of milk cow.

My husband and I recently made an offer on a house with 2 acres of land. Not a lot of land, but our minds are racing for how we can really utilize it all! I found your videos on YouTube and I was instantly addicted!! I am learning so much watching your daily vlogs. I grew up on a “food farm”, so don’t know much about raising animals. Thanks to you and K, I feel like I know a lot more now!
PS… Congratulations on your upcoming addition to the family!

We live in Longview TX and are renting with the option to purchase the house needs a complete renovation and until we get this house fixed we have to put the homestead on hold . We home school our daughter and work minimum wage jobs barely making it just tired of having the government take care of us when becoming self sufficient seems more likely and we would need help from your videos

When you’re straining the milk is that just like a giant funnel or is there a screening or something to separate your milk from creame really enjoyed your channel just started watching it tonight I think. Your Cow seems very docile. Do you know if she is an A2A2 cow? Recently ran in to some information on some cows of A1A2, I could not digest the casein protein (which are big operations) but I can drink and cook and use A2 A2 milk and I’m so glad because I do love milk and butter and cheese so I’m gonna start making my own butter and cheese from A2A2 milk. This reaction didn’t start until my mid 60’s.

There is a cloth filter that we replace each time we pour the milk through, the filter cleans out hair or any other contaminants. The cream separates with time. Thanks for watching Linda!

Just found your site, and just signed up for the course. Currently I live on 1/3 acre and have most of it in garden. Last yr I home canned tomato’s (several ways), Kentucky wonder green beans, several varieties of squash, peppers. I also grew watermelons, cantalope. potatoes and a variety of lettuces. these things were abundant enough that I had enough fresh vegies and greens that I could put them on my table daily, canned at least 20 quarts of each thing I listed in my canning list. plus I shared with a single mom who lives accross the road from me. I really want to move to the country area just so it will be easier to have livestock. I want in time to have chickens, maybe pigs (still trying to decide). Anyways just wanted to say thank you I cant wait to check out your course and I am going to try and listen to your older podcasts.

Hi Austin and Kendra,
I have been very much enjoying watching your YouTube episodes! I’m currently rehabbing at a nursing home from a bad fall a year ago. I live in Clymer, PA, just North of Indiana. The nursing home I’m at is here in Kittanning. I was very excited to hear that you guys live in Western PA. Is that still the case? Would love very much to meet y’all
someday. When I’m done with rehab at the nursing home, I’m moving back to my friend’s house. He and his wife have accumulated a homestead since I’ve been gone this last year. Haha
A hundred+ chickens, ducks, for bothra meat a& eggs. Also, an alarm goose, a couple of goats. And a pig (which is now in the freezer) so I have a LOT of critter sittin’ and Homestead practice to do when I finally back home. LOL
Keep up the great work y’all are doing, you’re an inspiration to us all, my friends!

I feed with my neighborhood cats so I will have to keep all them separated. Would love to meet other people in the Savannah, Georgia area who are getting started with raising their own food.
