Honeybee, our smallest Mini Jersey Cow has her first calving, and things don’t go as we hoped.
This picture from Oregon State Calving School Handbook helps explain what happened…
The first picture shows what the normal calf presentation should be during a calving…
Imagine a calf, 2 hoofs forward, head tucked in between, diving out of its mother effortlessly. Yep. The perfect serene peaceful natural calving.
This is not what happened.
Our little Honeybee had a calf insider her that was presenting with a foot folded back.
This is an abnormal presentation, and is dangerous for both the calf and cow. The calf could get stuck inside the cow, die, and even lead to the death of the cow.
When a calf presents wrong they refer to this as Dystocia, and according to an article from Iowa State University “dystocia is a major cause of calf loss with some studies reporting that 1/3 of calf losses are associated with dystocia.”
We have helped pull calfs in the past, but we have NEVER had a calf with an abnormal presentation.
What happened? Were we able to save the calf?
Watch the video live with us at 5PM Eastern Time today, we will be in the chat to watch along and answer some questions you no doubt will have.
