Learning to Hunt Alone is Hard
In this episode of Homesteady, we discussed learning to hunt, and how many mistakes one can make when learning without a mentor.
Aust learned to hunt by trial and error for his first few years, spooking many a deer his first year.
After still hunting for the good part of the morning, Aust sat down for lunch, making a rookie move of sitting on his but, when suddenly a big buck arrived, catching him unprepared and off guard.
Lessons learned the hard way finally brought Aust to a point where now he harvests multiple deer each year, filling his freezers.
Venison is awesome
Deer hunting is challenging, but the rewards are great. Venison is a flavor filled meat, with a wide range of uses.
One deer can provide a hunter with
- Steaks
- Chops
- Roasts
- Sausage
- Burger
And when prepared right, venison can pass even the most anti hunters palate.

Don’t forget canned venison! It’s a favorite at our house, and a good backup in case you run out of freezer space or you worry about power outages. When we get out canned venison, we like to thicken the canned juices into a gravy and then pour the venison and gravy over rice or mashed potatoes. It’s been a favorite of mine since I was a little kid!
Great idea for a course by the way!

What books about deer hunting do you recommend?
austin martin says
Hi Carole,
Actually I prefer podcasts, and magazines for my whitetail info consumption. I like the hunt fish journal podcast, the wild game hunting podcast, and petersons bowhunting guide podcast, as well as field and stream and deer and deer hunter magazine. Hope that helps!

The Foxfire books are an excellent resource. The entire set sells for around $220 at http://www.foxfire.org/ they cover much more than just hunting. I really think any homesteader should have them.
